Advertising sells the future. Its leadership was cast in 1987. Same haircut. Same uniform. Same keynote about "disruption". The numbers are below. You can argue with them — but they have citations, and your rebuttal probably doesn't.

8 / 100

of the world's most award-winning CCOs are women.

Of the 300 most-awarded CCOs, ECDs and CDs, just 39 were women. Still the benchmark study on creative awards inequity.

controlled pay gap for women in US advertising — 8% for mothers.

A 2026 peer-reviewed study of 926 US ad professionals, after controlling for education, seniority, hours, geography, agency type, department and race. Over 25 years: $167,042–$271,829 in lost earnings. About a third of salary variation stayed unexplained.

STAT_052026
96% / 33%

of women know there's a pay gap. Only 33% think they're personally underpaid.

The 'immunity illusion.' Same study also found male managers were more likely to stall pay-equity progress — and that men who reported discomfort working with women were paid more. Cool cool cool.

STAT_07Mar 2026
83p / £1

Women at the UK's biggest agencies earn 83p for every £1 men earn.

A 17% gap. 58% of agencies report a pay gap worse than the national average of 12.8%. Based on mandatory UK government pay-gap filings.

−22%

Women reported negotiating MORE than men — and still earned 22% less.

UC Berkeley research (Kray et al.) concluded negotiation propensity can't explain the pay gap. In a separate MBA exit survey: 54% of women negotiated their first offer vs. 44% of men — men still got more.

STAT_092007 / 2019
−2.5%

Women negotiate 30% more often than men — but ask for 2.5% less.

That difference in what's asked for accounted for virtually all of the actual salary gap. And when women do negotiate hard? A 2007 Harvard study found evaluators penalized them as 'less likable.' Men faced no such penalty. Fun game.

Identical resume. Male name gets 30% more callbacks than female name.

Worse for women with kids. In the classic Yale/PNAS study, 'Jennifer' was offered $4,000 less than 'John' on the same application — and a mother's PTA membership made her 79% less likely to be hired and offered $11,000 less.

SHE STILL EARNED
22% LESS.

The "women just don't ask" excuse is officially retired. They ask. They ask more often. The system just doesn't reward it — and when they push, they get called "less likable." Neat trick.
